  Herman Betten is a When I was seven years old, I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up: working for a radio station. I was fascinated by the "magic" of radio. In high school I put my passion for writing to good use by writing for the school paper, even starting an underground one after the principal censored an article. Perhaps it is no surprise I went on to study radio journalism. After a short-lived career in radio, in 1995 I started a financial newswire in Amsterdam, Betten Financial News (later Betten Beursmedia). For 12 years I led the editorial team in Amsterdam and Antwerp. When I left my company (Dow Jones acquired it), I was asked by Royal DSM to help with financial communications. I joined DSM and started to work with its then-new CEO Feike Sijbesma in changing the external perception of a Dutch chemical company to a global leader in health, nutrition, and materials with a strong emphasis on sustainability. In the years after I joined, among other things, DSM went through a portfolio transformation; the company rebranded itself and introduced a multiple award-winning Integrated Annual Report. By being transparent at all times, using clear and concise language and ensuring alignment between external and internal communications, the public perception of DSM changed.
