Through the years, I gained experience and self taught myself in all fields of mechanical, electrical, automotive engineering. I became what would be called a jack of all trades. 1983, I salvaged an injection moulding machine from the scrap yard. Soon I had it working, using cannibalised parts from trucks and agricultural machinery. 1984, under the wise guardianship of the late Joe Githenji (MP for Tetu, Nyeri District), I started “Industrial Components Ltd.” From a humble beginning in a crude iron shed in my backyard on the outskirts of Nairobi City, we soon began moulding advanced engineering plastics. In a few years we specialised as third parties plastic parts specialist making design moulds and injection mouldings for parts for industrial machinery, offering the first in Africa, complete catalogue of conveyor components specifically designed for the food and beverage industry. We had also set up one of the best equipped in Kenya, in-house tool and mould building capacity. 1986 to 1988, I was also involved in the water hand pump design and development project sponsored by the World Bank and the UNDP. We came up with the “Afridev” worlds best “VLOM” (village level operation and maintenance) pump. I built all the prototype tools and moulds for the first Injection Mouldings for the same pump parts.
