Identifying wasted execution time lead me to strive for increasing the speed of large batch processing jobs. The demand for outside web connectivity has made it necessary to be come an administrator in the troubleshooting uniobject connectivity issues. While these weaknesses have become masked with increased processor horsepower and huge amounts of memory, the necessity for efficiency is even more necessary with the addition of processes and jobs that span multiple networks and websites. One process, receives input information from web users, sends requests to gather information from multiple websites and returns a SOAP XML response to the web users in a fraction of a second. I reduced the processing time of a month-end process from 4 days to 2 by inserting multi-threaded processing, also reduced a weekly processing of shipments files from 11 hours to 4 by utilizing a redesign of array handling. I have also had the challenge of doing a parallel system o/s (Universe) upgrade to a new machine while maintaining 24/7 web access to the data and access to over a 100 internal users. My perspective is, the machine should be a tool that aids the user in succeeding in their job functions rather than be an obstacle that slows them down and delays their progress. On the personal side, my wife and I enjoy the companionship of our golden retrievers and getting back to the Oregon coast whenever possible. I could be considered a smart ass in nature in that I like to see humor whenever possible and keep a lighthearted perspective so I don’t see my time as work, but simply tasks that need to be completed. I appreciate and enjoy working with skilled experienced people that know their areas of responsibility. I see myself taking direction from such people to improve their functions and make their job easier whenever possible.
