He then worked in TNK-BP in Moscow as Director, Group Engineering and as Technology Manager for BP Sakhalin before retiring in 2008. Cox’s technical specialty is arctic engineering. He has been involved in arctic research and operations for over forty years. Most of that time he has worked for BP, Amoco and the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, New Hampshire. He has performed extensive research on the physical properties of sea ice, ice conditions in the Beaufort Sea, man-made ice structures, and ice loads on offshore arctic structures. He is the author of over seventy technical reports and publications and holds three US patents on arctic construction. Cox has served on numerous industry and government committees including the Polar Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences, the Sea Ice Mechanics Panel of the National Academy of Engineering, Western Cochairman of the Northern Gateway Technical Committee and Chairman of the American Petroleum Institute's Arctic Systems Criteria Subcommittee. Now Cox spends most of his time in Angel Fire NM where he enjoys hiking, sailing, fishing in the summer and skiing, snowshoeing, and cooking in the winter. He also spends a fair amount of time supporting the mission programs at his church.
