There, he was responsible for the development of new business and products for the telecom industry as well as for building critical expertise and delivery for complex telecom programs. Prior to joining IBM, Varma was a Vice President at AT&T, where he retired in 2003 after a successful 25-year career. At AT&T, he had the CIO and service development responsibilities for AT&T business, network and local services. He started his telecommunications career at Bell Laboratories, where he held a number of technical and management positions with increasing levels of responsibilities. Varma holds a Masters Degree from Banaras Hindu University in India and a PhD from the City University of New York. He is also a recipient of numerous business achievement and software excellence awards
