At museums and the university, with a variety of publics and professionals, and interacting with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities, my goal is to facilitate engagement that weaves observers’ personal encounters with the history of an art object. To craft viewer-centered modes of communication transcribes the frequently lofty stuff of art history into learning that is accessible, meaningful and relevant to the goals of individuals or groups. My work in accessibility developed out of my teaching practice, the desire to further hone the skills to accommodate different kinds of learners. Teaching led to training and training to consulting. The beauty of this work is that any institution can take steps towards greater accessibility. Planning is rooted in the viability of actions, not the obligation to work beyond institutional means. Small steps can generate significant impacts and the opportunity for staff to convene around the goal of inclusion inevitably creates professional satisfaction and cohesion. Initiated into accessibility through art education for people who are blind or have low vision, this work remains a foundation for my development in the field because of the important ways it has taught me to see differently. I am regularly amazed and delighted by the human capacity to shape unfamiliar material into grounded sources of mental dexterity. A career highlight in this respect occurred while interacting with a visitor group around a large digital installation that mimicked stars and constellations. After a verbal description and discussion, a woman who was blind from birth said, “I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen the night sky.”
