As the author of numerous books and articles on Hispanic research, he is a regular lecturer at local, national and international conferences about his areas of specialty: Spanish, French and Italian language research; United States probate and legal systems; and genealogical evidentiary analysis and advanced methodologies. During the last eighteen years he has taken fifteen different student groups to Europe to learn firsthand how to research in archives in Spain, France, Italy or the Netherlands. He has been an Accredited Genealogist since 1975. He practiced law in California from 1979 until 1993 when he joined the faculty of the Department of History at Brigham Young University, where he recently attained the rank of full professor. He and his wife and colleague Peggy, herself a Certified Genealogist, write and research together. They do professional genealogical research for clients with ancestors in Spain, France and Mexico.
