George Newell Email & Phone Number | My research and scholarship have focused generally on investigations of the contexts of schooling and the cognitive, and linguistic demands of school tasks, especially composing and learning in English language arts; examining the kinds of instructional support provided in undertaking those tasks; and assessing the knowledge and skills that result. For a number of years I used activity theory to examine the contexts for learning to teach secondary English, the development of early career English teachers, and the nature of the support and mentoring they receive for such development. My other more recent projects have included studies (with Dr. David Bloome and Dr. Alan Hirvela) of how teachers’ conceptions of argumentation shape their teaching of composition in the English language arts classroom. I have published in English Journal, English Education, Research in the Teaching of English, The Journal of Literacy Research, Reading Research Quarterly and Written Communication.
