I served until January 20th as the Acting Chief Counsel for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, on a detail from DHS's Office of the General Counsel, where I was a Deputy General Counsel. With Fishman working behind the scenes, the subcommittee will handle some of the more thorny issues around revamping the country’s immigration laws . . . .” And the National Journal stated that I was “an essential figure in the immigration debate [and] one of only a handful of staffers on the Hill who understands immigration law thoroughly and the political mazes it creates . . . .” In 2005, the National Journal stated that I was “the linchpin of immigration policy in the House.” In 2000, following enactment of the “Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act,” the President of the American Bar Association wrote to “express our appreciation for the fine staff work of George [whose] knowledge of the issue [and] willingness to listen to all viewpoints . . . deserves special thanks” and the ABA “advise[d] that Mr. Fishman’s technical expertise was invaluable.” And a leading criminal defense attorney called the bill “a remarkably well-crafted piece of legislation that carries through most of the reform agenda without unduly trammeling law enforcement’s use of forfeiture . . . .”
