George Amanakis Email & Phone Number | Georgios (George) Amanakis received his MD from the Medical School of the University of Crete, Greece and during the rotation in the Critical Care and Chest Pain Unit (Katholisches Klinikum Essen, Germany) he developed a major interest in limiting myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. He joined the Institute of Pathophysiology at the University of Duisburg-Essen under the direction of Prof. Gerd Heusch to complete his doctoral thesis (Kleinbongard, Amanakis et al, Circ Res 2018; Amanakis et al, Basic Res Cardiol 2019). In 2016, he joined the Laboratory of Cardiac Physiology at the National Institutes of Health, USA, under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Murphy. In 2021 he joined the Clinic of Cardiology and Angiology at Hannover Medical School, under the direction of Prof. Johann Bauersachs. His scientific interest lies in the role of redox sensitive post-translational modifications in cardiovascular disease (Amanakis et al, Cardiovasc Res 2020). He also sees great potential in the application of Deep Learning in Medicine and avidly explores potential solutions in Cardiology (using Python, Tensorflow and PyTorch). His long-term goal is to establish an independent research program focused on translating regulatory mechanisms of myocardial cell-death and deep learning applications to the clinic. He is also a code contributor to quality Open Source Software such as the Linux kernel, the OpenZFS filesystem, and the OpenWRT operating system.
