My work as a photographer and as a scientist focuses on the relationships between and interface of human, animal, and environmental health. A past recipient of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, I spent a year of travel focusing on different cultural attitudes towards whales and whaling in the Azores, South Africa, New Zealand, Tonga, Japan, Norway, and Argentina. I have worked as a trip leader and photographer teacher for National Geographic Student Expeditions since 2010, leading in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Tanzania, and Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks. In 2012, I received a National Geographic Young Explorer's Grant to document the images and stories of former Azorean whalers. My photography and writing have been featured by National Geographic Adventure, National Geographic News, REI, and Voices for Biodiversity, among others. I completed her Masters degree in Conservation Medicine at Tufts University in 2013, with a focus on the agriculture/disease interface in sub-Saharan Africa. Since finishing my MS, I have worked at the Center for One Health Research at the University of Washington, focusing on health and disease issues at the human-animal-environment interface. I am passionate about integrating the worlds of visual storytelling and research to develop new ways of communicating social and environmental issues to broader audiences and building unique platforms for education and outreach. I am also an avid outdoor adventurer and environmental stewardship advocate.
