Gareth Pretorius is a Improving Performance Through Learning Design. Growing up in the 80's I was fortunate to bridge the pre-tech & early internet days. I developed my problem solving creativity through tactile play with Lego and Tinker Toys; my scenario-based, branch-storytelling through Choose Your Own Adventure Books and my imagination through Playing Outside (no trademark required). From the early tech days of Quest games which inspired a delight of gamification models through the nurturing of empathy skills in RPG's, the stage was set for, well, the stage and my years of theatrical training at University allowed for a flourishing of innate fool-playing. The theatre is a realm of heightened reality. It allows for an exploration and access into a full palette of emotions. It's a training ground for listening skills, a sensitivity to, and awareness of space and personality, a capacity for multi-layered dialogue: an engagement with other, in the potentiality of the moment. As the paradigms of learning, technology and the access to knowledge move into new level of interlocked necessity, I am able to translate my unique skill set into the creation of Learning Experiences that go far beyond the mundane immediacy of 'click-and-be-done'. As members of the backstage team in the Learner's Journey, we may never get to see the 'light-bulb' moment when the lesson breaks through with a flash of inspiration, but when it's created appropriately from the start, we can trust that the 'Ah-hah! moment' will happen.
