Francesco Romano Email & Phone Number | I am an experimental plasma scientist at the Swiss Plasma Center of the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. There we set up a unique experiment that investigates electron clouds that form in gyrotron electron guns used for fusion reactors. Its name is TRapped Electrons eXperiment - T - REX and its novelty allows to explore exotic nonneutral plasmas in strong magnetic fields and azimuthal flows. During the Ph.D. I have developed a new helicon plasma thruster, unique of its kind and based on a birdcage antenna. The design is focused, but not only, for an Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion system. There, we also developed multiple intake designs for such system. The new plasma thruster, the RF Helicon plasma thruster (IPT) operating on a birdcage antenna, has been set into operation in March 2020. The thruster has been designed, simulated, integrated, verified, and successfully operated on Argon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen. I have great passion for everything regarding space, energy, and cutting-edge technologies, and I am very curious and eager to learn. I also own a Diploma degree in Organ and Organ Composition, and I am working as a freelance organist. My passions are space, playing piano and organ, cycling, travelling, sailing, classic sports cars and their restorations, birds, and science fiction.
