He was previously Foresight Lead at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), a leading UK research and social change organisation, where he focused on developing creative and participatory processes to help people imagine and shape more regenerative futures. This includes recent work for the Scottish Government’s Energy Strategy and Just Transition Plan, which supported rural and post-industrial communities to explore the impacts of net zero policies and share their visions for climate justice. He also led the development of foresight training programmes and organisational capacity building initiatives, supporting teams to deliver a wide range of research and public engagement projects, from technology foresight research, to participatory workshops with young people using creative design fiction approaches. Fabian is an expert on the future of work, having authored several influential reports on this topic. He played a leading role in developing the RSA’s future of work programme of policy research and social innovation. This included developing a framework for measuring job quality that operationalised the recommendations of the UK Government’s Taylor Review of Modern Employment as well recent research exploring the impacts of remote working on health and wellbeing. The scenarios he developed for the future of work in 20235 have been used to inform workforce planning and economic development strategies for Health Education England and Southampton City Council, and develop a module for Coventry University arts and humanities students to help position themselves in a changing world of work. Fabian has provided commentary for major media outlets including the Financial Times, Guardian and BBC, and gave evidence to the House of Lords on the impacts of technology on the economy during the Covid-19 pandemic. He recently was co-author of academic horizon scanning study with Forestry England and the University of Cambridge that used a Delphi approach to identify the priority emerging issues for the forestry sector to address in the next 50 years. Fabian has an MSc from the London School of Economics (LSE) and is a member of the Association of Professional Futurists (APF).
