I have also mentored nurse interns and junior nurse when I was charged with the duty of a charge nurse in my establishment.This role also helped me built strong interpersonal relationship skills. My current role as a staff nurse in a medical-surgical ward requires a multidisciplinary approach as most of the patients requires complex care need. I work together with medical team, surgical team, specialty nurses, dietitian and physiotherapist. Overtime, I have learnt to be calm and collective while carrying out my duties irrespective of how tedious the job maybe. I strive to be empathic while caring for others. I am able to pass information clearly ensuring the intended meaning is delivered, I also listen attentively to others (patients, their significant others and colleagues) and take all information seriously, this in many situations has helped. For instance, a patient’s relative of mine had refused to give consent for treatments including IV and oral medications, after her husband who was on palliative care for diagnosed Oesophgeal cancer was sedated from IV morphine for pain management. I took time to find out the reason for refusal and listen to her concerns and provided her with adequate information on treatment plan and option, informed the medical team on ward round for proper counselling of patient and relative, and the lead nurse as well, this allayed her fear and she demonstrated good understanding of pain management by giving consent to administration of other medications and necessary interventions.
