McEoin has two decades of experience at the forefront of the Australian art, design, and architecture sectors, working in strategy, curating, and publishing. McEoin was a long-standing editor of (inside) Australia Design Review, Creative Director of the Victorian Government’s State of Design Festival in 2008 and 2009, and Creative Director of Unlimited, the Queensland Government-backed Asia Pacific Design Triennial in 2010. At the NGV, McEoin leads two dynamic departments focused on 21st-century art and design. These departments are often focused on their role as commissioners of groundbreaking art and design projects. Plus the delivery of major group exhibitions such as Melbourne Now 2023 and the NGV Triennial series. McEoin is known for his commitment to commissioning ambitious, research-based, critical, and speculative art and design projects with a social and ecological agenda. Or projects that bring the public into dialogue with complex subjects, including the role of technology in shaping the future. Ewan is the lead curator of the NGV Triennial, a vast free exhibition that foregrounds new work commissioned internationally. Past exhibitions include globally resonant works, including solo exhibitions with Formafantasma’s Ore Streams, 2017; Liam Young’s Planet City, 2020; Quantum Memories by Refik Anadol, 2020; Broken Spectre by Richard Mosse; and Heterobota by Agnieszka Pilat in 2023. Ewan is the lead curator of Melbourne Design Week, the largest design and architecture event in Australia, and the annual NGV Architecture Commissions program. He is an adjunct professor in the School of Design and the Social Context at RMIT University and a member of the board of the Robin Boyd Foundation.
