I learned the importance of proper maintenance, having successful backups, and utilizing monitoring services to the fullest. My journey at the MSP led me from a Helpdesk role to a Systems Engineer role and help me build a wide foundation and surface level understanding of IT. I'm eternally grateful that I was given the chance to prove myself and the room to grow. With that foundation, I moved to an enterprise IT environment as an Infrastructure Support Engineer. That's where I really started getting my hands dirty (in the figurative sense); I was able to pilot new programs and services, manage minor projects on my own, and prepare, configure, and deploy new equipment - everything from workstations to bare metal SQL servers to networking equipment. Not only did my technical skills and knowledge grow leaps and bounds, but I learned how an IT/IS department should run; I was able work with, and learn from, developers, analysts, management, 3rd party stakeholders, end users, and partner organizations. To this day, I still interact with a lot of the people I've worked with while in this role. I had the chance to use and expand the skills I gained in the Infrastructure Support Engineer role with a cybersecurity focus in my current role as a Security Engineer at a financial institution. I've honed my skills with Cloud services, IT Security, Identity Access Management, APIs and automation, and working with different stakeholders. I also gained new skills in DevOps, Enterprise and Solutions Architecting, and AuthN/AuthZ protocols like OAuth and OIDC. I've also be able to lead larger projects than I have in the past. One I'm particularly fond of was an enterprise-wide migration of our CIAM tool from an on-premise/self-managed tool that to a modern, centralized SaaS based CIAM service. I learned so much about the different aspects of the institution that rarely work with IT Security; worked with so many different stakeholders at every level; and I helped them, and their userbase, make a smooth transition to the new system. I am working my way toward an Architect role now. With the help of business classes and obtaining certifications, I look forward to what my future has in store.
