Dr. Ernane Souza started his career as a pharmacist in Brazil and then he became a registered pharmacist in the states of Iowa and Michigan. He provided pharmaceutical care to culturally diverse communities and counseled patients in four languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. He completed his pharmacy education at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (Brazil) and the University of Salamanca (Spain), followed by a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Iowa, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Pharmacy Translational Science at the University of Michigan. Then, he became an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Florida, where he taught Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacokinetics integrated into clinical practice and conducted research in drug design. His academic research led to various publications in the fields of medicinal chemistry, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, clinical pharmacology, and a patent application related to the discovery of a new class of therapeutic molecules. He received the New Investigator Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy for his academic research. Dr. Souza was fascinated by the integration of various disciplines within the pharmaceutical sciences to develop new medicines. So, he joined the pharmaceutical industry with a role in drug discovery and development. While working in Pharma, he completed a certificate in Artificial Intelligence in Pharma & Biotech from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he incorporates the latest technologies into preclinical and translational medicine research. Dr. Souza is now an Associate Director at Supernus Pharmaceuticals, and his collaborative work comprises various phases of drug development, from drug design to first-in-human clinical trials.
