Erlo Roth is a Erlo is a pathologist and leader in medical laboratory quality in the US and Latin America. He created Brazil's first laboratory accreditation program, and was named “the father of laboratory accreditation”. In 2015 he became a member of Brazil's National Academy of Medicine, the greatest honor conferred to a physician there. In 2017 received the title "Emeritus Fellow" of the College of American Pathologists for his contributions to laboratory accreditation and quality management. He is the first physician to become credentialed by RABQSA as an ISO 9000 auditor for healthcare in the US. A hands-on person, he has been involved at all levels of laboratory operations, He was president of the DuPage County Medical Society and the Illinois Society of Pathology, and a trustee of the Illinois State Medical Society. In 1986 he acquired and turned around an environmental testing laboratory - ALEX Inc., that then became a major player in the Chicago market. He is an innovator, member of the American Medical Informatics Association, having installed the first laboratory information system (LIS) at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio and the first comprehensive LIS at Hinsdale Hospital, in Hinsdale, IL, When he operated an environmental laboratory in Chicago, he developed a novel method of on-site analysis of asbestos dust during asbestos removal at a nuclear power plant, which now is standard procedure in industrial hygiene. He also pioneered the concept of setting lab charges based on costs Fluent in Portuguese, German and Spanish, he has long been involved in international affairs and served on the International Committee of the CAP. Since 2013 he has represented Brazil on the ISO/TC 212 Committee that develops international quality standards for medical laboratories. Specialties: General management, quality management, personnel development, strategic planning, laboratory informatics and streamlining operations as a Lean Six Sigma greenbelt.
