Erin Tapahe Email & Phone Number | I pursued a journalism degree because I wanted to write about the success, strength, and power of Native people. I had more freedom to write about topics I was passionate about for my senior capstone. I wrote about underrepresented populations, including the Native American community with a well-balanced narrative. These articles were some of the school paper's most popular articles. The Code of Ethics from the Society of Professional Journalism states, "Give voice to the voiceless." This statement has become my personal mantra. During my freshman year at college, I quickly learned I did not have a voice. I was a minority within a minority. My experiences led me to find my voice. I danced in BYU’s Living Legends and traveled the world to share my culture. I served as Miss Indian BYU and was an ambassador of BYU’s Native American students. I mentored upcoming multicultural students and shared my experiences as a college student. My senior year, I served as the Executive Director in BYUSA Student Advisory Council and was part of a team to implement the first PEN (Perspective Education Narratives) These events were panel-style on diversity which included: Native American, Latinx, Black, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized groups. From these experiences, I learned the importance of empowering others in helping them to find their voice. I was nominated and received a BYU’s Brigham Award during my senior year of college. The purpose of this award is, “to recognize any BYU student, faculty, administrator or staff “who went about doing good” (Acts 10:38) in quiet unheralded ways for the benefit of other students.” This award is the highest service award at BYU. Through all my heartache, tears, and sacrifice, it made me realize the impact I had on the BYU community. I am now working at Tribal Business News as a reporter. I am excited to jump into the world of business and continue to share the successes of Native American people.
