I have almost 15 years’ experience as a volunteer suicide first aider in the workplace, and I spent five years as a full-time Field Officer at MATES in Construction (a construction industry-led not for profit working on suicide prevention in heavy industry) where I taught others in the construction, mining, and energy sectors how to do the same. Working closely with the MATES academic and research team, I became familiar with empirical research that addresses the experience of suicidal distress and key practical strategies for responding to suicidal distress. In 2020 I completed a Master of Arts in Human Security and Peacebuilding at Royal Roads University in Canada, furthering my social research literacy and deepening my understanding of practical ways to integrate mental health and suicide interventions with priority populations and communities. In 2021 I was awarded the Rachel and Ernest Fox Legacy Award, a 25,000 grant by the Royal Roads University Victoria Foundation that recognises academic success. I am currently working as a co-investigator for Roses in the Ocean on the national ‘Co-Creating Safe Spaces’ translational research project, which is led by the ANU Centre for Mental Health Research and evaluates safe spaces as innovative alternatives to the emergency department for people experiencing suicidal crisis/emotional distress. I believe in interdisciplinary collaboration, and that lived experience partnership in research is a critical component of evidence-based suicide prevention. I also believe in the power of sharing stories, including my own personal lived experience, and am regularly engaged as a lived experience speaker in workplaces and at community events to help reduce the stigma around mental health and suicide.
