  Erin Henderson is a I have recently completed a Master of Science in Ecology at the University of Alberta. My focus was on polar bears use of the western Hudson Bay flaw lead. I used satellite telemetry to track polar bears movements, and synthetic aperture radar to map the flaw lead. I am continuing my research as a research assistant studying polar bear use of the flaw lead and polynya in the Beaufort Sea. I completed my B.Sc. in the co-operative education program with a major in Biology at the University of Waterloo in 2014. At Waterloo, I was on the Dean’s honor list for four consecutive years and was awarded three scholarships. During my Bachelor's, I completed five work terms. Two work terms were at Robarts Research Institute in the DNA sequencing laboratory, one with Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada in a plant pathology laboratory, and two with the Public Health Agency of Canada. Through my work terms, I gained experience with DNA extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, greenhouse and field experiments, as well as bacterial and fungal culturing methods. I completed an honours thesis at the University of Waterloo studying the population dynamics of phytoplankton along the Grand River in Waterloo Region. This project involved collecting water samples from multiple sections of the Grand River, and measuring the phytoplankton abundance using a Fluoroprobe and Water-PAM. I then identified and counted the phytoplankton cells using an inverted light microscope and analyzed the trends of the changing phytoplankton communities using SPSS analytical software. I was a marine research intern with the Society for Ecological and Coastal Research in Ahousaht, British Columbia. I analyzed acoustic recordings of a bay in Clayoquot sound for the presence of cetaceans and paired this with visual observations of cetaceans in the bay to determine presence/absence of cetaceans and boat traffic. I sampled benthic organisms to numerate and identify mysid species in the study area. I identified individual gray whales using photographs. I volunteered with Salthaven, Thames Talbot Land Trust, Nature Conservancy of Canada, and the Cetacean Research and Rescue Unit.
