Emily Email & Phone Number | I am a 3rd year PhD Candidate at the University of California Los Angeles in the Molecular Biology Institute. My career goal is to work at the intersection of Business and Science. Currently, I work in the lab of Dr. Thomas Vallim and Dr. Elizabeth Tarling focusing on uncovering molecular mechanisms involved in maintaining cholesterol trafficking and homeostasis in cardiopulmonary diseases. We use AAV CRISPR as a tool to knockdown proteins involved in bile acid metabolism in the livers of adult mice. My research aims to investigate the mechanisms that drive tissue specific functions of metabolically active organelles within cells. Outside of the lab, I work towards promoting teaching, training and learning through multiple facets. I serve on the Molecular Biology Institute (MBI) recruitment committee (seasonal), retreat planning committee (seasonal), and social media and marketing committee. In the recent past, I have mentored middle and elementary school students through science clubs/activities called “Curiologie in the Classroom (CiC)” and “Letters to a Pre-scientist.” To represent my peers at the university level, I served as the MBI representative on the Biological Sciences Council (BSC) and planned events focused on student awareness, growth, and peer mentorship. To enhance the relationships between research and industry, I actively lead the outreach team at Biotech Connection Los Angeles (BCLA), a nonprofit organization whose goal is to bring academia and industry together to drive innovation. My goal in this role is to lead a team of eight people to engage with students, postdocs, and professionals around the Los Angeles area to provide information on upcoming networking mixers, symposiums, workshops, and more. Lastly, I've actively participated in teaching opportunities such as mentoring undergraduates in the lab, serving as a teaching assistant at UCLA, tutoring high school students in science, and mentoring a local child who lost her dad to cancer. While my experiences in the lab have been extremely instrumental in my inspiration to pursue science, these extracurriculars, along with ones in the past, have significantly enriched my leadership skills, scientific creativity, and critical thinking abilities.
