Early on I was earmarked for a career path within Trade Marketing and Distribution where I came face to face with the most critical and complex facets of the sector. This occurred during a time of significant change and upheaval, both nationally and internationally when many aspects of our business had to be re-engineered. I was appointed to investigate business models for a Business Improvement department. I established a Change Champion Network for the national operation. Anyone who has ever tried to introduce change will know the complexities of undoing the status quo. After a baptism of fire, I now understand how nuanced the approach has to be, taking into consideration teams, individuals, and most problematic – managers. After compelling data from our customer satisfaction surveys, we considered the project successful – though never quite finished, as is the nature of continuous improvement. I then earned my stripes as an Area Sales Manager, and with a new appreciation for difficulties in the field, went on to accept the portfolio of National Skills Marketing Skills Development Manager. I came to grips with the BBBEEE requirements of our enterprise, achieving a level 3, as well as gaining formal accreditation for a global sales programmed through AgriSeta, a first in BAT group globally, and then went on to create and implement a strategy for Skills Development. I am currently the Route to Marketing Manager, where I have added supply chain logistics and distribution channel management to my portfolio of capabilities. Throughout the various milestones of my career at BAT, I have been supported by teams who have grown along with me. I guided, trained and developed them to my own standards of excellence, one of the most rewarding aspects of my exciting career so far.
