  Elizabeth Petrun Sayers is a I am a social scientist at the Office of Health Communication and Education (OHCE) of the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I have 15 years of experience in conducting and managing research projects that apply communication theory and methods to address various public health and social issues. My mission is to provide technical leadership and guidance in science communication, including health, risk, and crisis communication disciplines, to support the development and evaluation of evidence-based public health education initiatives. Currently, I conduct foundational research related to digital advertising and emerging media platforms within OHCE. I am also leading a project exploring audience analysis research and how we can best leverage audience insights to inform public health education. I have also led formative research for The Real Cost, a national multimedia campaign that educates youth about the harmful effects of tobacco use. Previously, I was a full behavioral and social scientist at RAND Corporation, where I co-directed the Center for Qualitative and Mixed Methods (CQAMM) and worked on various topics such as weather and climate communication, disaster preparedness, information operations and warfare, and community health and well-being. I hold a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Kentucky, and I have published 60+ peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and reports. I have also taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate level communication classes, previously for the University of Kentucky, University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania, and most recently at John's Hopkins University.
