For over 35 years, she has specialized in labor and working-class history and studies and women’s and gender history. Her current research is on teacher and nurse activism and the public good and on the modern occupational health movement. A union member for most of her career, she is the daughter and granddaughter of unionists, whose history dates to the 1930s. In fall 2023, Faue was a visiting fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Bologna for her project, “Re-Discovering that Work Is Dangerous: Redefining Workplace Risk in the Late Twentieth Century.” Faue received the Distinguished Service Award from the Labor and Working Class History meeting in 2022-23. The award recognizes her work in diversifying and democratizing labor history as coordinator of the North American Labor History Conference and in her scholarship. She served for many years as a labor network rep in the Social Science History Association. Faue’s work includes Community of Suffering and Struggle: Women, Men, and the Labor Movement in Minneapolis, 1915-1945 (1991), Writing the Wrongs: Eva Valesh and the Rise of Labor Journalism (2002), and Rethinking the American Labor Movement (2017), and more than 200 other publications. Faue received her B.A. (1979) in English summa cum laude, her M.A.(1985) and PhD (1987) at the University of Minnesota. Susan B. Anthony Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Rochester (1988-90), she became Assistant Professor at Wayne State University in 1990 and received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor (1993) and to Professor (2002). She was Interim Associate Dean of the Graduate School (2007-09), Graduate Director in History (2010-15), and History Department Chair (2015-23). Faue has been the recipient of many awards: the Board of Governors’ Faculty Recognition Award, Career Development Chair, Outstanding Graduate Mentor, the Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellowship, and the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award. She was elected a member of the WSU Academy of Scholars in 2023. Faue was Visiting Senior Fellow at the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis (1994-95) and Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Research on Women at Rutgers University (1995-96). As lead co-PI she received a National Endowment for the Humanities Next Generation Humanities PhD planning grant, which created the WSU Humanities Clinic, and a co-PI on Career Diversity grants from the American Historical Association and the Council of Graduate Schools.
