I suppose it was this aspect of me that caused me to join the Armed Forces, and I certainly had a colourful enough career there, but that's another story. People like having me around the workplace. I tend to get things done, and, as one of my former bosses put it to the boss of the place I was being sent to, I don't give any trouble. What that former boss didn't mention was that I always stand up for what is true, right and just, and if you happen to be a boss that likes to cut corners or manipulate systems for your own benefit, you'll find that I am certainly not very cooperative! I have withstood people three or four places up the ladder simply because I knew they weren't doing right, and that our own people would suffer for it. Well, one consequence of making stands is that you tend not to be rewarded for being a thorn in the flesh. So what. No reserves, no retreat, no regrets. I'm at a place in my life where I am slowly finding that there ARE people who care deeply about the same things I do. Increasing competence on a daily basis. I like Alan Weiss' adage about "Constantly surprised by how stupid I was two weeks ago." Giving help to others without hesitation. Trying out new ways of doing things. But always anchored to a bedrock of universal, non-negotiable principles. Specialties? Making things work, meaning bringing your strategy to life, provided, of course, you DO have a strategy in the first place. And if you don't have a strategy, I'll help you make one. I have worked for years in a large organization that constantly emphasized honing core competencies and skills, and always finding ways to apply those core competencies in endless permutations. Think of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony being raised on just four notes, for example. I guess you could sum it up as internal robustness, ready for any challenge or change.
