His broad research interests cover the fields of data science & analytics, statistical machine learning, AI, NLP and business intelligence. Prof. Lauría’s research has been published in a number of prestigious journals, including Decision Support Systems, the European Journal of Operational Research, the ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality, Expert Systems with Applications, and the Journal of Learning Analytics. He is co-author of a textbook on data and information quality published by MIT/IQ. He has served as a technology consultant to IBM, Microsoft, Exxon Mobil, Reuters, STET France Telecom, GE Global Research, and the World Bank among other global corporations. Dr. Lauría is the Senior Data Scientist of the Learning Analytics Initiative at Marist College. His research on early detection of academically at-risk students has been widely cited, starting with the Open Academic Analytics Initiative (OAAI), a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation aimed at increasing college student retention using data mining methods. The OAAI at Marist College was named a 2013 Computerworld Honors Laureate in the World-Good category. Following the successful conclusion of the OAAI, his early detection framework was chosen in late 2015 as a key component of the United Kingdom’s national analytics infrastructure provided by Jisc (Joint Information Systems Committee). Successful pilots of the early detection framework were completed at North Carolina State University as well as several UK universities managed by the Jisc. The latest edition of the early detection framework developed by Prof. Lauría, coded MUSE (Marist Universal Student Experience), has been recently implemented at Marist College. Dr. Lauría is the 2015 recipient of the Board of Trustees Distinguished Teaching award at Marist College.
