I have been practicing pediatric cardiac critical care and pediatric cardiology (inpatient and outpatient) since 1988. My clinical care, research and career goals have been (1) to improve the outcomes of inpatient care for critically ill infants and children with congenital and acquired heart disease, (2) to investigate and modify the causes of abnormal neurodevelopment in these children. Specifically, I have investigated the effects of intraoperative perfusion strategies on neurodevelopment in a cohort of newborns with transposition of the great arteries (TGA), now beginning their 32nd year of follow-up. I was the PI of an international, placebo-controlled, RCT determining the benefit of prophylactic PDE-5 inhibition to prevent low cardiac output syndrome in infants and children after open heart surgery, and have investigated optimal perfusion strategies using ECMO in neonates. I have also been fortunate to be a founding member of 4 International Societies: The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (1999), The Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcomes Collaborative (2006), The International Society for Pediatric Mechanical Circulatory Support (2010) and the World Society of Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery (2010). I have been on the International Steering Committee of the World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery since 2010, and will be the Co-Chair of the 8th Quadrennial World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, August 27th-September 1st, 2023 in Washington DC (postponed from 2021) I have been fortunate to work with and learn from countless passionate colleagues, many with a similar mission: to improve duration and quality of life, school performance, social interactions and life-long success for infants, children and young adults with heart disease. Finally, and perhaps most gratifying, I have had the privilege to help teach and mentor "the next generation" of pediatric cardiologists, nurses, pediatric intensivists, congenital heart surgeons and many others who care for these fragile children and their families. #payitforward
