After 33 years in Cornwall my life, too, turned upside down and in 2021 I moved to East Anglia and started a new page on a CV already longer than the Road to Ruin. From the mid-1960s my career was dominated by newspapers and magazines, largely but not exclusively in the UK. It embraced general news, crime and financial news and in date order, after the trade press, included Extel, the Yorkshire Post, Western Morning News, Guardian, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail and Citywire. After Communism imploded, I was invited to join a team financed by a Foreign Office Know-how Fund to explain to aspiring business people in Russia and Ukraine how capitalism worked. I found teaching more rewarding than churning out dreary stuff for bone-headed news editors, and back in the UK started teaching at Cornwall College, Truro College and later delivered courses for the WEA. In 2005, with my now late wife, the former investment analyst Sue Blacker, we acquired the Natural Fibre Company in Wales and re-located it to Cornwall. Sue expanded basic wool processing into a full service wool mill that scours, cards, spins and dyes natural fibre. It is thought to be the only company in the world doing this under one roof. I was a director and responsible for the web sites, public relations and marketing. We sold our interest in 2019 and I picked up my CV where it left off, but now I’m more writer than journalist having co-authored two non-fiction books, published a book of short stories, Tales to an Eight-eyed Grandson, and in 2020 written for Lume Books who published The Nilsen File Re-opened as an ebook. I’ve also done TV and had my own programme on local radio.
