Donovan Email & Phone Number | When I was a graduate student, the focus of my research involved Monte Carlo simulations of model systems. We were interested in self-assembly, cluster aggregation, and phase transitions. My postdoctoral work so far has modeled the spindle assembly checkpoint in yeast using coupled partial differential equations, and solving them using finite element analysis. The model so far has recapitulated many experimental findings like a very robust signal in terms of proper kinetochore attachment and approximate the kinetochore saturation. We also show how polyploidy can affect the robustness of the spindle assembly checkpoint. My experiences in research have shown me where my strengths lie. For instance I am adept at reading code developed by other people without comments and determining what it is for, and fixing it. Another strength of mine is being able to logically think of the analysis or mathematical method I need to use, and being able to break it down step by step, and turn it into a program. I also am able to learn new programming languages or software rather quickly, and often draw ideas from the wide variety of methods and scientific principles to relate to almost any project I am personally working on, or simply advising others on. Most recently I have become interested in machine learning in both its many implementations, and the theory behind many of the algorithms. I find it fascinating how applicable the ideas of statistical mechanics are in this exponentially growing field and vice versa. I am eager to be beginning a project or two in this field while learning Python and TensorFlow and look forward to any future possibilities to explore these areas further.
