Important recreations include sea kayaking, mountain biking and back country skiing. As an expedition leader, Don has led voyages to the Falklands, South Georgia, the Antarctic Peninsula, New Zealand’s sub-Antarctic Islands, Macquarie Island, the Ross Sea and East Antarctica. Don has been visiting the Antarctic regularly since 2002, when he first attempted the Shackelton's crossing on South Georgia. Don has also spent a considerable amount of time in Spitsbergen and Greenland. This is a wonderful contrast to the ‘in-ya-face’ of the Antarctic. The subtleties and grandeur of the Arctic creep up on you. The vastness of the spectacular Greenland fiords; and the Spitsbergen tundra colours and flowers are thoroughly absorbing. These harsh regions have major appeal as the shared domain of the photographer and climber, the birder and geologist, and the naturalist. These magnificent destinations are for those who enjoy the challenges and wonders of an expedition to the wilds of the high latitudes where one’s plans are at the mercy of the sea, the ice and the weather. Don and his partner Gill live in the delightful city of Nelson at the top of the South Island in New Zealand.
