He spent some time in Portugal playing football at Estoril Praia youth and in South Africa with the Kaizer Chiefs U18 team. He hung up his boots at an early to go into business. Diogo moved into the media industry with Peter Du Toit and Soccer Laduma, helping to set up the company’s web and mobile site He later founded Mobi-D, working with media companies such as SuperSport, Goal.com, KickOff, Soccer Laduma, and others, working across the African continent in Nigeria, Kenya, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia. He became interested in the coaching side while working in media and travelling to Brazil to watch football. Joined John Comitis and Cape Town City when the club was founded in 2016 and helped set up the club’s social media and marketing department. Being closer to the game again, Diogo’s interest in coaching was re-ignited, and he began to work within the club’s youth structures, while also pursuing his coaching qualifications as he started to do his UEFA Badges with Scottish FA. His first head coaching position was with the SAB (U18) team. After a season he was promoted to City’s reserve side in the Diski Challenge, first as an assistant coach, before taking over the head coach role in 2019. The following year Dutch coach Jan Olde-Riekerink took over as head coach of the City first team and requested that Diogo be part of his technical team. He was promoted from the reserves to become Olde-Riekerink’s assistant a position he has held at the club since. During that period Diogo also doubled up as City’s performance analyst, while he also continued to do his coaching badges. Diogo also served as Caretaker Coach in 2021, after Olde-Riekerink’s exit from the club, before reverting to the assistant role when Eric Tinkler joined the club.
