  David Skole is a David L. Skole’s expertise and research focus on forests, climate change and geospatial information for sustainable development. The current focus is climate change mitigation and adaptation in international development, with emphasis on carbon measurement for REDD+. His team works on measurement, reporting and verification for forest carbon, publishing several protocols for REDD+. He was formally recognized as a member of the UN IPCC that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He is now active in carbon financial markets and carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation projects in developing countries. He has supported the California emissions reduction programs under the Governor’s Climate and Forest Fund. He was a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange, and served as a member of its Offsets and Forestry Committees. His work supports international development programs of the US Government. His team now works on three major foreign assistance programs on REDD+ through USAID in India, East Africa and Indonesia. His funded research program works in West, East and Southern Africa, the Brazilian Amazon, India and Indonesia. He was senior investigator for the Carbon Benefits Program of UNEP and GEF. He advised the Forest Investment Program, and developed its monitoring and reporting toolkit. He is Implementation Chair of the UN Program, Global Observations of Land Cover. He is past-Chair of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee on Environmental Research and Education, and past-Chair of the International Geosphere Biosphere Program LUCC Project. He has been a member of several committees of the US National Academies including the Committee on Geographical Foundations of Agenda 21 and co-author of the report, Geographic Information for Sustainable Development in Africa, a framework for U.S. policy at the World Summit on Sustainable Development. Membership also includes the Committee to Review the US Climate Change Science Program, Committee on Geographic Sciences, and Standing Committee on Earth Science Applications from Space. He teaches a Professional Certificate Program on Forest Carbon Measurement and Monitoring through Michigan State University, and an international field study course in Costa Rica through EARTH University. His team develops capacity building programs for REDD+ and forest carbon management. The team deploys cloud-based forest carbon measurement and data management system, including an MRV Toolkit and several remote sensing tools.
