The ability to create both advanced software solutions from nothing more than blank files and solve problems is what drew me into software engineering. While studying business early in my college career, I was required to take a “Computer Applications in Business” course where our first project was to create a GPA calculator using basic HTML form elements, JavaScript and CSS. While the finished product was far from advanced, it was a web application I used quite often throughout college and it gave me a preview of what could be accomplished as a software engineer. The next semester I changed my major to a B.S. in Computer Science, and five years later I haven’t looked back. As an intern, my first project was to work with a Front end Developer and a UX/UI Designer to understand how customers were using one of our Direct-to-Consumer products, and to help build the UI with Angular 4.0 from design prototypes. After presenting my work to senior executives, I was given a full-time offer that I happily accepted. Today, I am a Back end Engineer on the Digital Team for ProSight Specialty Insurance, where I work on developing APIs that communicate with our core systems. Most recently, we have been building REST APIs using the .NET Core framework for one of our newest digital products while also focusing on optimizing our CI/CD pipelines to help with automating our builds, testing, and deployments in different environments. In my personal time, I also write code for side projects that I work on. My latest project is a web application, using React on the Front end and Flask/Python/MongoDB on the back end, that gathers the followers count of different celebrities on Twitter, and turns it into game to see who has more. I use these projects as a way to explore different frameworks/technologies and further my knowledge, while also continuing to do what I love. I recognize that it is rare that you find your career passion at a young age, and it is something I take advantage of in both my personal life and my career.
