After nearly 35 years in geoscience, most of it in industry and consulting for the last eight, the diversity and the direction is a challenge to describe. If forced to choose, I would characterise my role as a regional resource explorationist. My focus is on how subsurface resource at both the large and project scale can help activate an energy transition – i.e. a radical downshift in fossil fuel combustion. That includes how subsurface resource competes against, or works with, surface resources. I recognise a vital need to construct bridges between surface and subsurface resources – to understand where they compete and how they can work together intelligently. This, to optimise application of both. There are certain needs in common for different types of subsurface resource development, and certain fundamental earth processes that are vital to them all. Not only that but there are shared interactions with the commercial world that are crucial. Paetoro works hard to honestly communicate both the potential and the problems of various subsurface resources to those who may be less familiar with them, but who seek new and sustainable low carbon directions. I identify the following areas for ongoing focus: • Realistic quantitative probabilistic resource assessment with sensible, coherent treatment of risk. Fluid, mineral, and thermal resource. • Identification of key processes and controls driving fluid movements within the crust of the earth, and their PVT behaviour. • Mineral enrichment processes in the crust – magmatic, hydrothermal, sedimentary and diagenetic. • Structural geology and tectonostratigraphic context. • Geospatial workflows to best integrate these diverse data sets and marry them to the needs of practical applications by different customers. • Interaction with site engineering constraints. • Determined reality checking, as being in everyone’s best interest for sustainable development. The development of exploration strategies for low and medium enthalpy geothermal resource – both direct use heat and binary plant power, the establishment of regional genetic models and exploration strategies for REE mineral resources, plus the evolution of new mining business paradigms - look like being key areas of interest for 2024. It's possible to spend a lifetime becoming expert in these subjects and still have a million things to learn. Yet there is also a need for awareness of all of them and how they can interact to assist an energy transition. That is the space where I work.
