Having being introduced to Fortran and mainframe computers in my final year at school, I developed a passion for writing code to automate repetitive tasks and to perform analytical procedures. Platforms ranged from the early programmable scientific calculators, to IBM and Siemens mainframes, Prime minicomputers, Sun workstations and Windows PCs. I have revelled in developing and implementing computerised models for flood frequency analysis, dam risk/yield analysis, construction scheduling and monitoring, econometric modelling, performance optimisation decision support, computer-aided mass appraisal (CAMA) modelling for property rates assessment, data mining and spatial statistical analysis. As much of the infrastructure I deal with is linear, I specialise in analytical tools dealing with linear referencing and dynamic segmentation. I have maintained this continuous thread of modelling, analysis and application development throughout my roles as an Engineer at the South African Department of Water Affairs; Durban Regional Manager of GIMS (now ESRI South Africa); Director at Southern GIS and ENGIS Consulting, and Associate at Aurecon. The solutions I have developed have spanned multiple industries, including water, roads, transportation, rail, mining, defence, municipal infrastructure, health, telecommunications, power and environment. This multi-disciplinary involvement has allowed me to develop my specialist GIS skills while at the same time broadening my industry knowledge to become a true "specialist generalist". This involvement has allowed me to cross-pollinate innovations I develop in one area to all the others, positively benefiting projects in which I am involved. I am particularly passionate about linear referencing, and have developed advanced tools and applications in this area on all ESRI platforms - culminating in a runner-up award in the "Most Unique" category of ESRI's 2018 User Conference Map Gallery.
