When I look back at the products we made all that time ago and what we are designing now it is truly amazing. My first product was a compensator/optimiser and was coded entirely in Intel 8051 assembly language, very small 8-bit microcontroller, very little memory and an LCD black & white display with membrane keyboard. Things have certainly changed. Now we are designing products that have enormous capabilities and the demands on us to design products with even more is unrelenting. This makes life very challenging but very interesting as well. I see this as one of the things I love about this job – it never gets boring! I have years of experience in leading teams so that they can work in an environment where they can excel and innovate. I am only as good as the people who work for me so it is my responsibility to provide the tools, motivation, encouragement and environment so they can do well. I think that failure is not to be treated with contempt because it shows a desire to take risks and try something different. I have worked with the usual waterfall method of software design and more recently the agile methodology. Having worked with agile for the last three years I can say that there are definite advantages versus waterfall. I have a real appetite for continuous improvement as it drives the team to look at themselves, reflect and see what can be better. I promote the use of Test Driven Development (unit testing and test automation) as I think it is a key ingredient to delivering quality software.
