Market research, for example. Or helping with the actual execution of the business or marketing strategy. I’ve redesigned whole marketing departments, scoped out websites, acted as the face of projects or businesses with key stakeholders, mentored up-and-coming junior staff and conducted supplier reviews. I’ve also briefed and carried through brand redesigns with all sorts of creative loveliness. Many times. But, only ever with strategic thinking at the outset and not tacked on. All of this stems from having a lot of experience and being genuinely mentally engaged in my work. I know I moan a lot about people underselling marketing, as a discipline, but it’s because I genuinely believe it is a force for good - not some evil capitalist trick perpetuated upon a gullible public.
