Social justice and political engagement have been a passion of mine since a young teenager. When I started forming my own opinions about the world around me, I noticed a fire in my belly to learn more and become more involved in solving fundamental issues that lie within a broken system. My passion for studying the law arose when I was 14, just after reading the American classic To Kill A Mockingbird. I knew then that what I am ultimately meant to do is pursue the law in an effort to help others who are left vulnerable to societal inequities. This became my ultimate purpose in life, something bigger than a paycheck. Upon attending Merrimack College, I enrolled as a Communications and Media major because I felt that learning how to interact, understand, and relate to all types of people is important in helping me achieve my ultimate career goals. By choosing this path, I have been given the privilege of learning how to communicate between cultures, mediate and solve conflicts, and even promote my ideas to a mass audience. My decision to claim a minor in Pre-Law was a result of participating in Moot Court during my freshman year. This program affirmed my passion for the law and the art of litigation. I felt proud of my work, and I knew that I could only further tailor these skills and knowledge base if I began preemptively taking courses on the law prior to attending law school. I am a student at Merrimack College that is enrolled in the Austin Scholars program. In doing so, I volunteer two hours every week working at a Catholic elementary school in Lawrence. While my main tasks include assisting the teacher and children with things such as bringing them to recess or starting off their “morning meetings” on the rug, I have learned that the most important thing I contribute to doing my service is being present for the students. Some of the students I have met need to have a figure outside of their teacher to count on, to learn from, or even to talk to. The smaller moments of getting to know my students through one on one conversations have always meant the most. I believe that compassion is the catalyst for change, to recognize the value in all human beings no matter their creed is integral to who I am and whom I will always work to be.
