  Dan Glomski is a During 34 years as an informal science educator, I have presented an estimated 13,000 planetarium shows, science talks and demonstrations, led sandhill crane viewing tours, organized numerous science camps and activities for kids, organized observatory programs and star parties and a whole lot more. Public speaking is something I'm clearly comfortable doing. Not bad for an introvert! Much of my experience has been at small educational nonprofits. In such settings, you perform many different duties and learn on the fly. In my planetarium positions, I produced sky shows using audio/visual software like Adobe Aftereffects, Premiere and Photoshop. I learned how to write concise press releases. I learned not to be afraid of a soldering iron. In nature-related positions I learned how to reach and excite people about the wonders we can find in the outdoors if we slow down and look hard enough. In my days as a Mad Scientist, presenting science demonstrations to audiences of all ages and sizes, I learned how to repair equipment (why doesn't the vacuum pump pull a vacuum?) - often on the fly. Plus I could make science fun and entertaining. In workplaces like these, there often are no janitors, technicians or dedicated front staff. See someone waiting at the cash register to buy something? Take the sale. An exhibit broken? Figure out what's wrong and try to fix it yourself first. Dirty floor? There's the vacuum cleaner. Someone on the phone to schedule a program? Look for an opening that works for both them and us. One wears many hats. My years as an informal science educator may or may not be behind me. If the former, there are many other jobs in which I could see myself at home: a lab tech, for example. I'm a lifelong learner and there are many tasks I can perform, particularly with a little training.
