At Harvard, I direct one academic Division and one Unit in two separate Harvard affiliated Institutions, I see patients, I teach medical students and post graduate fellows and I conduct basic, translational and clinical research on prevalent Metabolism related problems i.e. obesity, diabetes, NASH, cardiovascular diseases and malignancies. I am interested in advancing clinical care, education and research, more specifically in translating basic research discoveries into novel diagnostic and therapeutic tools for common metabolic diseases. Towards this goal my laboratory utilizes a range of basic, translational and clinical research tools. As an internationally recognized expert on obesity and diabetes I have published two books (one on “Diabetes and Obesity” and one on “Nutrition and Metabolism” with more than two editions each), more than 750 scientific papers in Medline, more than 250 publications under the collaborative Look Ahead Research Group, more than 300 chapters and reviews with an H index of more than 150 in GoogleScholar which have received more than 162,000 citations. I have been designated highly cited scientist ( top 1 per 1000) by Clarivate consistently during the past several years. I have trained more than 180 scientists in my own laboratory many of whom now hold leadership positions (CEOs, CMOs, Full Professors etc.) nationally and internationally. As the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Metabolism I have quadrupled quality metrics and output (2022 impact factor 13.93) bringing it to the top 3% of journals in the category of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. I have also served on the Editorial Board of several other scientific journals. I have served on the Board of Trustees of HCHC, as a Board member, as consultant to pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, and as chair of scientific advisory boards of biotechnology companies. I have contributed to the development of several companies and I have functioned as the scientific co-founder of start ups. For my academic and public health service I have received National and International honors and awards, as well as honorary PhDs, and honorary Professorships worldwide.
