In 2021, he was awarded the Chair's Award in appreciation for his "timeless service and dedication to the Family Law Council" and also the Family Law Section's Joseph W. McKnight Best Family Law CLE (Continuing Legal Education) Article Award. Chris is active in the Texas Family Law Foundation, which lobbies the Texas Legislature on family law issues, and has headed the Foundation's Bill Review Committee since 2007. In 2017, the Foundation gave Chris its Alison Unger Award for Leadership During a Legislative Session. In addition to belonging to these organizations, Chris is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a member of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (2017 to 2021) and Texas Super Lawyers (2016 to 2021; Top 50 Central/West Texas 2021). Chris served four years on active duty as an air defense artillery lieutenant in the U.S. Army, mostly with the 8th Infantry Division in then West Germany. He received his juris doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law in 1993. He began his practice with the Underwood Law Firm in Amarillo, Texas that year. Chris is the archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas. He is the counselor for the Downtown Women's Center in Amarillo, Texas. He is married with three children.
