A good friend of mine showed me how to piece together a computer, after ripping mine apart and rebuilding it. Shortly after, Deus Ex fired right up (used a CD-Key and everything!). Years later, I often look back at this moment as a foundation of what started my trek into I.T. and computer science. In high school, I took some MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) classes, but I never planned for getting into a tech job. These classes were just to pass the time and it was something I was good at (another sign of my future, I suppose). While working at Best Buy, I became curious at what those crazy Geek Squad folks were doing. My curiosity and enthusiasm led to a new position and the beginning of an unstoppable career path. My growth in skill set took me into supporting larger systems and networks. While working in these positions, I learned about a little movement called "DevOps". It sounded similar to what I was doing, only these folks wrote software and automated the processes I was doing by hand. I built a server, bought some books, and from there broke into the world of systems engineering and DevOps. My love of hardware is still in what I do, but on the software side via AWS, software defined networking, infrastructure as code, and performance optimizations. I am also a huge Linux geek and have Tux on my desk at all times. In every position I held, I've focused on being "the guy that can fix anything". Not that I want to be irreplaceable or a single point of failure. I do support and participate in knowledge sharing, documentation, and continuing education of all forms. Eventually, I plan on moving into the software architecture realm, be it on the development or the infrastructure side, and begin rounding off my knowledge of architecture, networking, and distributed systems.
