Come to think of it, we never had "emergency cash reserve" days. Then, one day, we had an "investment bond" day. (This didn't last long!) But it did get me thinking. Who should have an investment bond? Or a pension or an ISA? Was there an optimum combination? I decided that exams would have the all of the answers…. A few jobs later and I started to learn what I thought I was after. However, it's amazing how the majority of exams teach "how" but not "why". I actually started learning “why” when I joined the "Institute of Financial Planning". I was also fortunate in that I got to work with successful people in financial services who were working out how they could implement that "why" approach. These days, I still enjoy the technical challenge of the role. (I'm comfortable with a far wider range of products than pensions and ISAs!) I also appreciate the ongoing research from people far more academic than I'll ever be. My current role focuses on the "why", but the "how" is just as important: 1. Helping to organise that medley of accumulated pensions and investments, to be able to retire having achieved that all important plan of action to be able to do so. 2. Providing options around unexpected inheritances such as being able to pass the money on straight away without risk of inheritance tax. 3.
