For the past 3 years, I have been teaching English classes online at the British Council. I have also been teaching Workplace LINC at Douglas College for the last 6 months. I have experience teaching general English, Workplace LINC, Business English, IELTS and Cambridge Assessment preparation courses, among others. In Mexico, I have developed and delivered courses, workshops, webinars, and talks on a plethora of diverse subjects. During my years as a teacher and consultant, I have continuously sought out advice, help and ideas from coordinators, supervisors and other teachers and consultants. When asked to take on greater responsibilities, I have readily accepted. In Tokyo, I regularly asked for help when I didn’t understand my role or duties. In Vancouver, I took it upon myself to offer my own guidance when I saw that some new teachers were struggling. In Mexico, I was asked to become a mentor and deliver webinars. I have led and mentored teachers from different backgrounds, and I have accepted leadership from others to develop professionally. In Tokyo, due to high demand among advanced students, my manager asked me to create a course based on CNN articles. I accepted this challenge and gave a course that exceeded students’ expectations, all while staying within the methodology of that school. In Mexico, a Virtual Learning Environment system was put in place that students loathed. By listening to their wants, profiling, and helping them understand their role and mine, I was able to erase student concerns about the new system and deliver effective lessons. As a result, my feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. When I make a mistake, I assume responsibility and look for ways to improve and avoid repeating such mistakes. I have attended workshops (such as BBELT and ANUPI) and volunteered to give and run workshops. I will continue developing myself by reading up on the subject and soliciting advice from co-workers. I have always been ready to meet any challenge. I am able to manage diverse classes with multi-cultural groups from confrontational backgrounds by finding common interest and delineating our roles in the classroom. Having taught in four vastly different countries has helped me identify different approaches to teaching and understand what each school requires. It has made me adapt as a teacher to identify with school objectives, which creates a shared sense of belonging.
