As a bioinformatics scientist with a focus in clinical diagnosis, having a background in biology, statistics and computer science helps me recognize the hidden issues of regular NGS analysis and devise appropriate solutions. Improving the accuracy of mutation detection is the long-term primary goal of mine. Through collaboration with my colleagues, I have developed algorithms to detect difficult disease-causing mutations, including mitochondrial deletion, large size insertion/deletion, Alu element insertion, and STR expansion. A statistical model is also established to detect gene-conversion and potential false-positive/false-negative calls for clinically important genes under pseudogene influence. Applying NGS data to detect structural chromosomal abnormality is one of my main focuses since NGS data provides better resolution compared to aCGH. My current project focuses on extending the algorithm to detect gene fusion and translocation. Skills * Proficient in Python, R, Linux shell script, PHP and SQL. Prior experience in MYSQL, C/C++, Matlab, Perl, and SAS. * Hands-on experience with large-scale WGS, RNA-seq and ChIP seq data. * Solid understanding and excellent skills in algorithm optimization, statistical analysis, and machine learning methods.
