Charlotte Newman is a They say curiosity killed the cat. I say: if we'd understood the cat's needs, we could've built a safer way for him to climb that tree. I've always been curious - but being more risk averse than the proverbial cat, my explorations have been more intellectual than physical. From a young age I was a voracious reader, eagerly gobbling up stories about the human experience. As an adult I gravitated towards studies in anthropology, behavior, and diverse cultures. I sought out perspectives that differed from my own, and cultivated a fascination for the complexity of human behavior. Early on in my career I realized that when we create products and services, we often create them from our own perspective. We design solutions that we would want, if they were for us. The result? Our products might work for us, but not for the people using them. Why build a ladder for a cat? (Don’t. He can’t climb down.) I became a User Experience Researcher to help change this trend; I’ve used my fascination for human perspectives throughout my work in education, microfinance, agriculture, and public health to create tools and services to improve others’ lives – based on a deep understanding of those “others’” experiences. My passion for learning about others lends itself naturally to conducting and communicating UX research, and I thrive as the link between designers and clients. Not only does this lead to happier users, it increases efficiency and effectiveness of products and programs – so it’s better for everyone!
