Chance Krawchuk Email & Phone Number | I was introduced to engineering through the lens of competition. During my first year on Tech Hogs Robotics, we barely squeaked into the top 5% of teams with a robot built using borrowed hand tools in a leaky garage. My fifth year we were part of an alliance that took second place out of over eight thousand teams. That passion for continual improvement pushed me first to high school valedictorian and then on to Purdue University. My freshman summer I worked for Marshalltown Tools as a mechanical engineering intern, and was invited back the following summer as an industrial engineering intern. Three days before that follow-up position was to start, the company unexpectedly axed their internship program- another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Scrambling for for a way to both pay for my college degree and gain valuable experience in the field, I picked up two jobs. One in Walmart as part of their order online pickup in store initiative, and the other back at Marshalltown, but this time as a floor laborer. Working as a floor laborer taught me valuable lessons about manufacturing. It taught me about how floor workers communicate and bond. It taught me about the potentially-fatal effects of sleep deprivation in the workplace. It taught me the value of a good pair of steel toed boots, and proper PPE use in general. It also taught me about the potential dangers that come from an engineering staff that doesn't listen to their floor associates, and how quickly routine shifts can become disastrous when ambitious deadlines meet cold reality. After sustaining an injury on the job at Marshalltown, I decided to focus on supporting associates and companies find the intersection of productivity and safety. Working with Avient has provided me with a plethora of opportunities to do so. I've simulated plant floors to minimize forklift congestion and maximize pedestrian safety, worked with international plant administrators to streamline safety training documentation, and tackled decades-old ergonomic threats by pairing modern analysis tools with mechanically simple solutions. I'm proud of the work I've done, and with graduation on the horizon I'm excited to move forward into my next chapter.
