A childhood friend once asked me, "What do you think is the single most important issue society must solve?" His prompt has stuck with me since and is part of the reason why I strive to use my passion for engineering to create and improve clean technology solutions. My experience as an Intern at MidAmerican Energy Co. contributed to the efficiency of our existing natural gas infrastructure through a new digital technology package for use by journeymen in the field. In testing and development of the package, I was able to detect 25+ software bugs, helped write 5 manuals, and was responsible for general computer tablet related technical support. Through this position I was able to learn about the operation of energy utilities, the technologies they employ, and the future avenues of possibility for clean technology within the energy sector. I believe that immersion among different behaviors and cultures is paramount to expanding an understanding of how technology is used, and thus how to design and implement technology. Thanks to my international studies, I possess the global perspective, communication skills, and awareness of different cultural problem-solving approaches necessary in today's technologically driven world. Equally important to technological development is physical experience: using, troubleshooting, and in some cases breaking the technology in focus to gain an intuition of and ideas for how to improve. My experience as an Express Lube Technician working on automobiles allowed me to get my hands dirty and mind focused on these concepts. I learned applicable skills, such as Root Cause Analysis and how to follow procedures in a team environment to complete cars within 25 minutes. This position gave me the professional "street smarts" that enable me to be a productive contributor to clean technology advances. I pride myself on being able to work productively with anyone, or alone. I am able to maintain composure in crisis, and welcome feedback with a growth mindset. Through working towards clean technology solutions, we can improve the health of our planet, bolster our own health, provide more equal access to resources, foster national economic growth . . .
